TEAS test sections: total questions, scored items and timing
Short answer: The TEAS follows Reading, Mathematics, Science, then English and Language Usage. It has 170 total questions, including 150 scored items and 20 unscored pretest items, with 209 minutes of testing time. Total questions and scored questions are different counts.
Compare the sections without mixing the counts
| Section | Total items | Scored items | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 45 | 39 | 55 |
| Mathematics | 38 | 34 | 57 |
| Science | 50 | 44 | 60 |
| English and Language Usage | 37 | 33 | 37 |
| Total | 170 | 150 | 209 |
Sources: ATI’s content outline supplies scored counts; its section-navigation guidance supplies section totals and timing. The total testing time should not be confused with the entire appointment, which can include check-in and other procedures. Follow your delivery instructions and any approved accommodations.
What each section asks you to do
Reading: interpret passages and evidence. Mathematics: work with quantities, algebra, measurement and data. Science: use anatomy/physiology, biology, chemistry and scientific reasoning. English: apply language conventions and interpret vocabulary in context. The official outline is the detailed scope reference; these summaries do not replace it.
Section navigation and calculator access
You can revisit questions within the active section. After closing that section, you cannot return to it. Do not assume that finishing one section early gives extra time in another. Prepare to make decisions within each section’s limit.
ATI supplies a four-function calculator: built into computer delivery or provided by the proctor for paper delivery. Personal calculators are not allowed. This corrects the earlier claim on this page that calculators were prohibited.
Practice the format as well as the subject
Official TEAS includes alternative item types in addition to conventional single-answer multiple choice. Our current single-answer practice is not a complete simulation of those interactions. Use official format examples to become familiar with the test controls.
When reviewing practice, separate an incorrect concept from a missed instruction or an unfinished question. That distinction helps you choose between content review and timed work. A raw score in our question bank is not an official TEAS score or an admission guarantee.
Choose a next step: build an error-based study plan, check math setups, or organize science review.
Try the reasoning before choosing access
Use free TEAS practice to inspect an explanation. Account practice includes saved work, missed-question review and an AI tutor; see current access options. Ask the tutor to explain a step, then check the response against a reliable source. AI responses can make mistakes.
AdmitNurse is independent of ATI and nursing schools. Our practice items are original, not released exam questions. Current single-answer practice does not reproduce every official TEAS interaction, and our practice results are not calibrated to official scores.

Frequently asked questions
Are the total and scored question counts the same?
No. The TEAS has 170 total questions: 150 scored and 20 unscored pretest items.
Can I return to a section after closing it?
No. ATI allows navigation within the active section, but not back into a closed section.
Can I bring my own calculator?
No. Use the calculator supplied for your exam delivery method.
Is the full exam appointment exactly the testing time?
Not necessarily. Testing time does not account for every check-in or appointment procedure. Follow the instructions for your testing location or remote session.
